“Why is that kid wearing an eye patch?” Craig Kennedy interviews Dr Maanasa Indaram about the health equity challenges of pediatric amblyopia, the leading cause of preventable vision loss in children.

Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision impairment in children, affecting approximately a kid in every classroom. While treatment can resolve the condition, children covered by Medicaid have poorer outcomes than their commercially-insured peers.

Standard of care treatment, penalizing the non-amblyopic eye, is hard on children and their families, and leaves a majority of children with persistent amblyopia. Even when treatment succeeds, recurrence occurs in 1 in 4 children. For older kids and those previously treated, there have been few to no treatment options.

In this session, Part one of a three part series, we will talk about the unmet need and health equity gaps of amblyopia and introduce Luminopia, an FDA-authorized treatment that addresses these challenges. Next month’s Part two will explore the growing body of clinical trial and real-world evidence that demonstrates how Luminopia is being used to fill these gaps.
